Each day comes and goes as we all wait for the arrival of the vaccine and to begin to return to “normal” whatever that means to you.
There is no disputing that our lives are forever changed by the events of this year. For all those that have been directly affected by COVID; either suffered themselves or watched helplessly while friends or loved ones suffered or died, we extend our heartfelt sympathy. There have been many challenges for all of us, more for some, less for others. At the risk of sounding pollyannish, is it too soon to look for positive things and important lessons learned?
Prior to this year we took for granted so many things:
- Freedom to travel
- Freedom to share time with others
- Family either birth family or chosen family
- That LGBTQ people deserve equality
Surely, we have learned to cherish what is important in our lives and to turn down the volume on everything else.
Where do we go from here? Despite knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel, we may not be able to gather together for months. How do we celebrate the Holidays? Here is one way that we can connect with and give back to an underserved community near and dear to us:
Many of you remember our wonderful Holiday Party last year where we were entertained by members of the Reveille Men’s Chorus. At that event, our members were asked to bring items that would be donated to the Thornhill Lopez Center for LGBTQ youth. We responded with an outpouring that really made a difference.

We will be donating the entirety of our holiday party budget ($500) to the center on behalf of GLAAS. This is just a start: If all of our 120 members gave a minimum of $15 (2021 membership dues) , that would be an additional $ 1800.00. We can do this! In addition, your monetary donations will be eligible for a dollar for dollar AZ State tax credit, so please consider giving even more. See the Thornhill Lopez website for further info on tax credit.
Please make your check out to SAAF and write Thornhill Lopez in the memo portion of you check. You may drop off your check at the home of Bill and Linnea Boaz, 37441 S Canyon View Drive.
Due date for all Donations: December 30, 2020.
Other News: Perry Shapiro Estate: Exciting news: Perry named GLAAS as one of the beneficiaries of his Estate. This is a developing story and we will update your as information comes in. We will be looking to the membership for guidance on how to use these funds.
